Gobustan

Gobustan is where Azerbaijan's landscape turns raw. Its UNESCO-listed rock art reserve preserves more than 6,000 engravings cut into limestone boulders over roughly 40,000 years — hunters, reed boats, cattle and dancing figures — alongside the Gaval Dash, a stone that rings like a tambourine when struck. A short drive further, dozens of cold mud volcanoes bubble across a cracked grey plain, part of a country that holds close to half of all known mud volcanoes on Earth. There is little shade and almost no vegetation, which is exactly the appeal: the site is usually visited as a half-day trip from Baku, best in morning light or late afternoon.
