Gabala

Gabala is Azerbaijan's most developed mountain resort area and the easiest place to swap city heat for cool forest air. The Tufandag cable car climbs above beech and chestnut woodland to viewpoints and ski runs used from December to March. Lower down, Nohur Lake sits still and green against the ridgeline, and the Seven Beauties waterfall steps down a narrow gorge above Vandam. The region also carries deep history: nearby ruins mark Kabalaka, capital of Caucasian Albania for centuries. Hazelnut orchards cover the valley floor, and local restaurants lean on river trout, lamb and mountain honey. Comfortable as a two- or three-night base.
